Happy Fall Everyone!!

Carlsons Floral and Gift - White Plains POGotta admit – Fall is my favorite time of year.  It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts.  I look at the fourth quarter of the calendar year as the first quarter of the next year…and I think others feel the same way.  About a week ago I was at Carlson’s Floral and Gift on route 100B on Dobbs Ferry Road in the White Plains PO.   They are always ahead of the curve.  The early signs of fall were there – but summer hadn’t quite left the building.  The flowers below were of the late summer variety.  The Mums weren’t quite blooming, the Halloween pumpkins hadn’t arrived – yet some of the trappings of fall  – like our pumpkin friends in the photo on the right  had made their appearance.  Carlson’s is a great store for quality arrangements and the displays can be really uplifting after a long hard day.  I took these photos with my iPhone and will go back to take some more photos as the fall season gets under way!

Update on Trump Tower of White Plains NY

Trump Tower White Plains NyTrump Tower White Plains NY – is one of the buildings that dominates the downtown White Plains skyline.  It was the first of the high rise complexes to go up in the city and it was the tallest building in White Plains until the Ritz made its appearance at the end of 2007.  As far as White Plains condos go, Trump ranks among the most luxurious.  This is one complex people are always asking about.  So I’m giving an update near the end of the 3rd quarter in response to all the questions about Trump and the Ritz.  For more information, you might want to visit my web page for Trump Tower   which has more information than will be presented here.

Update on the Ritz Carlton of White Plains –

The Ritz Carlton - White Plains NYThe Ritz Carlton White Plains represents the pinnacle of high-rise luxury in downtown White Plains, not to mention the county of Westchester.  As far as White Plains condos are concerned, it doesn’t get any more luxurious than this!  Located in the heart of the downtown area, it is just steps from some of the finest dining, entertainment and shopping that  Westchester has to offer.  Lets not even get started on the amazing amenities the Ritz offers – and the views on the higher floors are simply breathtaking. You can get Manhattan, the Long Island Sound and everything in between in one massive panorama. Being just 33 minutes from midtown Manhattan is the icing on the cake.

Downtown White Plains in the Fall….

Right now I’m experimenting with a new video/slide show format for my still photos…. I had a recent debacle with Animoto and they canceled my account and turned off my video feed.  After having so many compatibility problems I’m hesitating to commit to a new vendor.  Interestingly, I found Pro-Show Web – when trolling the web for customer service issues with Animoto.  Apparently, I was not alone and several professional photographers suggested them.  I want to create more local videos making them a staple of my blog.  Any feedback – positive or negative will be most welcome!   If anyone has trouble viewing the video – I would love to know about it.  Be sure to let me know what browser you are using.

So this very short video  is a slide show of  downtown White Plains in the late summer and fall.  The downtown is vibrant and active with Trump Tower and the Ritz Carlton dominating the scene as high-rise buildings.   White Plains is often thought of as the mini-me Manhattan and with good reason.  Many Manhattan restaurants and shops have opened their doors in White Plains  was successful transplants.

FASNY and Gedney Farms – What is the bottom line for home values?

Recently, I’ve posted several posts on the issue of the French American School of New York and their  purchase of the Ridgeway Golf Club.   Previously many of the home owners in Gedney Farms enjoyed the wonderful vista of golf course views from their back yards.  Most bought their homes with the understanding that should the golf club disappear, the local zoning was for very low-density housing . Now FASNY wants to build a major campus for 1200 students on the grounds.

Fotos on the Fly – The Yonkers NY Waterfront….

About 10 days ago I had about an hour to spare – so I grabbed the camera and spent some quality time on the Yonkers Waterfront.  After writing about the Science Barge and my new feathered friends, I thought it was time to share the waterfront photos.  The area is the southernmost  part of the River Walk that is being built along the Hudson from Peekskill to the Bronx border.  Eventually it will be a contiguous walk.  The views of Manhattan were pretty amazing even though it was hazy and hot – and that little girl in the last photo was obviously having a great time…

The White Plains Beautification Foundation & the “city in the park”

White Plains NY has often been referred to as “the city in the park”.  It has a long tradition of trying to maintain green spaces even when pressure from developers would turn the entire downtown into a solid block  of concrete, brick, mortar, steel and glass.  Thanks to activist citizens, the green “feel” has been maintained.  Not without many a fight and not without a great deal of help from several organizations.

Zoning Schmoning – we can get around that!

Zoning – Schomning!  That’s what a lot of developers and buyers with deep pockets are saying these days….

In a world increasingly divided between the have mores and the have nots, and municipalities struggling to make ends meet – those with deep pockets feel that minor incidentals such as “zoning” and a “city planning”  are small obstacles to be pushed aside with relative ease.   All they have to do is purchase a property – zoning not withstanding – plant their flag and impose their “vision” for the future of the land on the community.

  1. Zoning – Who cares? We’ll just threaten litigation if the city refuses us.
  2. Declining Property Values? Change is inevitable -  so if a few people get “hurt” in the name of progress – that’s life.
  3. City Planning? – We bought the land – the city will just have to change its “plans!”
