Where in Westchester is White Plains NY

Tibbets Park - White Plains NYWhen searching for Westchester NY homes for sale, it can be difficult to sort out the individual municipalities, their characteristics and even their location within the county.  For many buyers they seem to meld into one large mass of confusion.  This series of posts are designed to  alleviate some of this confusing for the Westchester NY homebuyer.

Getting from here to there – White Plains NY is centrally located:

White Plains NY is one of the most centrally located municipalities in Westchester NY.  As such, it is land-locked  with no direct access to either the Hudson River or Long Island Sound.  However, its central location means that you are never far from anything when you are in White Plains.   The map below shows just how central that location is.

White Plains borders Scarsdale to the south west, Harrison to the east and Mamaroneck to the south.  Hartsdale borders to the west and Valhalla to the north.

Hats off to White Plains Finest….

Public Safety White PlainsAt the outset – I would like to stress that this is unusual for downtown White Plains.  It may be a  sign of the times.  Certainly many cities have reported an uptick in crime although White Plains  NY has not really had any spikes in the crime rate that I am aware of .  Desperation makes people do desperate things.

Sunday started out as a day that is somewhat typical of my weekend.  I had two sets of showings with two  buyer clients.  My last client was a referral from someone I had sold a home to a few years ago and we were combining business with pleasure as I found myself enjoying a lovely party in his unit after the showings.

White Plains NY Housing Market Statistics – Q4 – 2010

Rocky Dell White Plains NYThe aftermath of the tax credit caused a slowdown in the housing market generally in Q4 2010.  White Plains NY homes for sale were no exception.   Particularly hard-hit were the entry-level condo and coop markets.  However, the ability to get jumbo loans again has bolstered the upper end markets which flagged badly during the early part of what I call “the great recession.”

Since the market is decidedly mixed, one has to be careful not to draw broad conclusions from the gross data without some thought to details.

Also it is good to see that as  the new year enters it second month, that White Plains NY homes are starting to move.

The Metro North Commute for Lower Westchester – Focus on the Harlem Line

The Harlem LineMy recent web page about the Metro-North commute to lower Westchester. created a good deal of interest.   Another post about the New Haven Line and the Hudson Line were also well -received.  So now I am adding the Harlem Line to this collection of posts.  For those interested in commuting by car might also like to check out my web page about commuting by car in lower Westchester.

The Harlem Line:

The Harlem Line – depicted in the map on the right,  passes through the central towns and cities of Westchester County.  During off-peak hours there are three trains northbound to Westchester and three trains southbound to Grand Central Station.   The major express stop is White Plains which – with very few exceptions enjoys the distinction of being a stop for virtually every train on the line.  Apart from the White Plains express stop, there are peak hour express trains from Crestwood, Scarsdale, and Chappaqua.

The Metro-North Commute for Lower Westchester – Focus on the New Haven Line

Westchester Train Lines - Metro-NorthA few days ago I put up a web page about the Metro-North Commute from lower Westchester to Grand Central Station.   It seem to be quite popular but could only addressed the train lines and did not provide much in the way of detail.  So I will provide a few posts featuring each train line.

As stated in my previous post,  lower Westchester boasts commuting options that are the envy of the Tristate area.  When asked why prices in Westchester have remained so resilient, one of my answers is always “Metro-North.”

The New Haven Line – (or the red line) begins in Grand Central Station in mid-town Manhattan and stretches to New Haven CT.  The first stops are in Westchester County featuring the cities and towns located along the Long Island Sound.

Westchester NY New Year’s Eve…

Tarrytown NYTonight’s the night we ring in the new year…Happy New Year Everyone one!  The Westchester Calendar of Events has been taking a break since I published all the events through the New Year’s weekend in a previous post on the Holiday Season Calendar of Events.

The primary New Years event in lower Westchester NY  takes place in downtown White Plains and begins at 10:30 PM.  The New Years Eve family spectacular takes place outdoors on Main St. & Court St. and features music, a ball drop and fireworks at midnight.  Parking can be problematic – so if you plan to go – leave time to park.

See you next year!

Westchester Christmas Light Displays – White Plains NY (Fotos on the Fly)

For those still looking for Westchester Christmas light displays – stay tuned.  There is more to come in the next few days.  This latest set are from Gedney Farms White Plains.  These displays come under the heading of “less is more” variety of light displays. They are lovely, but perhaps a bit more geared to grown ups.  Still – they are great for the entire family.  The last photo is more spectacular to look at than the photo indicates.  Its amazing what spot lights and with very little in the way of glitter can do to light up a home.  Subtle – but spectacular.  My next photos will be more high voltage!  This was definitely a low key display…..
