Located in the heart of downtown at 20 North Broadway in White Plains NY – the Broadlawn is one of the most desirable cooperatives in White Plains. The central location of the Broadlawn helps make it special. It lies within a block of the White Plains City Center, and Trump Tower. you can easily leave the car behind and walk to shopping, fine dining, entertainment and the train. Rated a walker’s paradise by WalkScore.com - the area ranks a 97 out of 100 with respect to walkability. The commute to Manhattan is 33 minutes on the Harlem Line. With the likes of New York transplants such as BLT Steakhouse and Level 42at the Ritz Carlton just a short stroll away, the lifestyle at the Broadlawn has a distinctly urban upscale feel. The White Plains Performing Arts Center is also just a short walk away. As for shopping the Westchester mall as well as the City Center mall along with major supermarkets including Whole Foods are all a comfortable walk away. In spite of being in near the center of the downtown, the area across from Tibbets Park creates an oasis of peace and quiet. It’s a world apart from the hubub despite its very central location.

As White Plains NY condos go, Jefferson Place offers a great deal in the way of amenities for the money. The Residences of Jefferson Place is a condominium complex with a split personality. The complex spans on square block between Livingston Ave. and Rutherford Ave. in White Plains, NY with units on 300 Mamaroneck Ave. and 31 Greenridge Ave. Jefferson Place is located a scant half -mile from heart of the downtown including the White Plains City Center. The city side – facing Mamaroneck Ave. is an eight-story urban mid-rise with a sophisticated brick façade. The suburban side of the complex on Greenridge Ave. gives a bow to the Highlands community where it resides.
The following is an update of the sales stats at Jefferson Place. Prices have come down nicely over the past few years and for those interested in buying, I would strongly suggest that you get moving. The gift of super-low interest rates can not last forever and combined with the prices that we now see, this is a gift. If you qualify to buy – I have to ask what an EARTH are you waiting for???? Housing is highly cyclic. Those who miss out on this crazy low market will be kicking themselves for years to come. This is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity in the housing market.

It seems as though every single day I hear another story about pets being put into shelters as a result of the sour economy. These may not even be foreclosures, but may be families forced to scale back from a single family home to a condo or coop. You guessed it – the condo or coop nixes the pet. This is particularly hard on our canine friends and I’m getting e-mails and pleas almost daily begging people to spare their beloved pet from the animal shelter. Most of the time it is to no avail and many of these wonderful companions are put to sleep.
In the meanwhile – I’m seeing condo after condo and coop after coop nixing dogs. Complexes that were once an oasis for those in need of a home that will take their beloved dog have put up MORE restrictions not less. The same holds for rental complexes.
Westchester Condos & Coops & Pets:
I’m going to be very blunt. Westchester condos and coops are about the MOST pet UN-FRIENDLY places imaginable. Manhattan, Riverdale, most of the Bronx, Queens and Fairfield county are ALL more flexible than Westchester are all more pet-friendly than Westchester. Personally, I’m sick to death of seeing – “no restrictions” chaining to “restricted weight” or “no dogs.” We already have a crisis I think it is unconscionable that complexes are making this matter worse.

This is a unit that I have featured in the past. It is located at The Broadlawn in White Plains NY – 20 North Broadway. Recently the unit has undergone a face lift. The pine paneling which dominated the the living area has been removed and the plaster walls restored and painted. The dramatic mantel remains intact and the French doors to the balcony complete the picture.
The Broadlawn is a stunning complex located in the heart of downtown White Plains just a block from Trump Tower and the Ritz Carlton. Here is a link to the original listing post with photos. New photos of the living room will soon be available on this site.
Meanwhile – for anyone interested in a condo or luxury coop in downtown White Plains – this listing is a must-see. It is truly one-of-a-kind.
The complex is also pet-friendly with board approval – a rarity in Westchester for such an urban location.

Scarsdale Cooperatives:
Scarsdale coops are very popular for commuters and long-time residents alike. When people think of coops in Scarsdale, they are often thinking of the famous Garth Road. Unfortunately, there are no longer any dog-friendly cooperative complexes on Garth. However, nearby on Central Ave, there is such a complex.
Scarsdale Country Estates:
Scarsdale Country Estates is located on Campus Place and Sentry Pl. off of Central Ave. Although they have a Scarsdale, P.O. address, it is important to clarify that they are actually located in the town of Greenburgh in the famous Edgemont school district. These are lovely old world garden style units with fine moldings, hard wood floors and fireplaces.

Last year around March a young couple called me up seeking a buyer’s agent. They were about to get married and they wanted to buy either a coop or condominium. We were at the height of the credit crisis but they were in great shape to make that first purchase and so we went on our way.
There was one distinct caveat…they wanted to a dog – and they wanted a German Shepherd. Now this is a challenge. But let’s face it – I’m a sucker for anyone with a dog. After all, I have three goodly sized canines myself in the form of 2 Siberian Huskies and a Husky/Cattle Dog mix.
Dogs are tough sale to condo and cooperative boards:
But here are the facts: Its tough enough to find a condo or cooperative that will accept dogs – but a German Shepherd is much tougher. Even if the complex accepts larger dogs many are restrictive with respect to breeds. The German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Akita, Pit Bull, and from time to time my beloved Siberian Huskies are often on the chopping block specifically by condo and coop boards. Why? These dogs are supposedly known to have attitude problems such as a tendency to attack/bite, over-protectiveness and the like.
To me, as an animal person who understands dogs quite well – (I’ve lived with 8 dogs over the course of my life) I think that boards would do better to concentrate their efforts on the individual dog and its owner rather than the breed itself. After all, dogs, like their human counterparts have individual personalities. My two pure huskies are like night and day personality wise. The owner also plays their part. Aneglectful owner who doesn’t care about those living around them can turn the sweetest and most agreeable dog into a nightmare for his neighbors.
Buying a condo in White Plains NY can be very expensive. Cooperatives offer a viable alternative and financially stable complexes are great investments. But for those who own dogs, relatively few are pet-friendly. Here is one of the premier cooperative complexes of White Plains – and the best part is that its pet-friendly.
The Surrey Strathmore is a complex of six mid-rise buildings which surround a courtyard. This is perhaps one of the more upscale cooperatives in White Plains. Built in 1939, the complex boasts some of the graces of a by-gone era. The ceilings are 9 ft high, and graceful archways separate living room, dining room and kitchen areas. Each unit has at least one of the Surrey Starthmore’s signature curio nooks. The floor plan is excellent.
Located at the Southern end of White Plains, the Surrey Strathmore is located on Bryant Ave which almost acts as the “dividing line” between the Southern residential area from the Northern downtown. So, the Surrey Strathmore sits on the edge of the residential neighborhood, the Highlands where quiet walks on tree-lined streets are just a block away. Perfect for a walk with the dog. On the other side is the beginning of the downtown area within walking distance of the famous and upscale Westchester Mall, Whole Foods, Cheesecake Factory, Morton’s Steak House along with some favorite local restaurants including Iannelli’s. A bus taking commuters to the White Plains Train Station stops right at the corner of Bryant Ave and Old Mamaroneck Rd. – which is the Southwest corner of the complex.
