Furniture Sharehouse Drive – Sun Nov. 13 from 9AM-1PM

The Furniture Sharehouse is having the last in its fall furniture drive series in White Plains NY on Sunday.    For those wanting to know how to help flood victims from the hurricane in New York (Irene) – this event should be on top of your list.   This is ideal  for anyone who is thinking about moving and decluttering.  Its ideal for those who feel t that their gently used furnishings are getting out of control…. and taking over the home.  In cases like this you might want to load up the SUV and bring them to a place where they will be used by needy and grateful families.

For those who do not know what the Furniture Sharehouse is all about – it is a not-for-profit furniture bank that coordinates with many social service agencies in Westchester – helping needy families to furnish homes that would be nothing but 4 bare walls without help from the commmunity.  According to Marie Graham – they have furnished nearly 1500 families so far.

The Time:  Sun Nov. 13, from 9AM – 1 PM

Fotos on the fly: Mallards making waves….

Every once in a while I get an opportunity.  I was supposed to be working into the evening on Saturday, but a last minute cancellation freed me up unexpectedly.  So I decided to enjoy the last afternoon of daylight savings at the Rockefeller Preserve with Jade & Tundra in tow.  We had a nice walk around Swan Lake.  I was trying to take photos with two dogs on leashes….to say this looked clumsy was an understatement.  But I did get a couple of nice pictures that I decided to post right here.

The duck population was hard at work preparing for the cold months ahead.

This Mallard was “making tracks” or “waves” in a very purposeful way….

Larchmont NYHere are a few photos I have taken along the way over the past week or so  while running around the county.  Most were taken with my iPhone – as they really WERE on the fly while I was working with clients.  But its fun to see what people are doing. Halloween has become such a fun holiday in Westchester  that its getting up there with the 4th of July in terms of internet searches.

Westchester Events – Halloween Happenings – Jack O’Lantern Blaze

The Historic Hudson Valley Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is back – bigger and better than ever.   Every October Van Cortlandt Manor  becomes transformed into a Halloween extravaganza  with over 4000 hand carved- Jack O’Lanterns on display throughout the manor.  The tour is well worth the time and effort and the effects are really quite stunning.  I was there last year and hope to return this year – though time constraints may get in the way.  Bring your camera.  My pics (sadly) didn’t turn out because I was playing with a new camera lens that night and NOTHING worked.   Wish I was able to capture what my eyes saw.

The tour takes about 40 minutes and begins at half -hour intervals.  I have to say that  this event sells out VERY, VERY fast and many sessions are currently sold out.  So make you reservations NOW…and have a great time.

Where: Van Cortlandt Manor – Croton-on-Hudson NY

When: Tickets are still available for Oct. 20, 27, 31, Nov. 4,5, & 6.  The tours begin at 6:30 and start at 30 minute intervals until 9:30 PM.

The Price:  Adults $16/$20 on Sat.  Children $12/$16 on Sat.

Westchester Events – Halloween Happenings – Horseman’s Hollow

Halloween Sleepy hollow NyOne of the most active months in the Westchester calendar of events is the month of October.  Halloween is big news particularly in Sleepy Hollow and up the line along the Hudson River.

Horseman’s Hollow at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow NY was a smashing success last year.  It received great play and great reviews. Now it is back this year – bigger and better than ever.  By popular demand it has been extended to 12 evenings. It started last week but there is still time for a good scare before Halloween.

This is perhaps one of the “darker events” that is not for the faint of heart and probably not suitable for small children.  It takes place at the historic Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow off of Route 9.   There are creatures of all kinds – earthly and otherwise and costuming that is one of a kind according to friends who went last year.   Of course you will meet the famous horseman.  I was driving by the other day and saw the horse right off the property eagerly getting ready for his performance!

Where: Philipsburg Manor – Sleepy Hollow NY – off Route 9

When: October 14-16, 20-23, 27-30  -  7 PM – 9:30 PM  at 30 minute intervals

The Price:  $20 weeknights – $25 weekends

Tickets are going fast so sign up ASAP - Click Here for Horseman’s Hollow

The town of Mamaroneck is 350 Years Young…

Come join the celebration that begins on Friday the 16th and continues for the entire weekend!

First  – A little history of Mamaroneck NY:

The town of Mamaroneck was purchased by an Englishman – John Richbell in the year of 1661.  The New York Legislature created the town of Mamaroneck in March 1788.   The town was divided into three portions in the 1890′s  to deal with the increasing need for municipal services that a single town could not provide.  There was the village of Larchmont, an unincorporated area,  and the village of Mamaroneck.  Part of the village of Mamaroneck was in the town of Rye.  These subdivisions exist to this day.

Second – The Celebration:

Friday - The Fun begins with a Softball game at Harbor Island between the two fire departments serving the community at 7 PM.
