Westchester Events Calendar – Valentines Day 2011

After my not so minor accident of last week – I am glad to be back. This week – the Westchester calendar of events revolves around Valentines day. Thank goodness we are expecting a slightly warmer weekend as well as sunny skies. Today when I saw the bright sunshine – I was almost in shock!

For those who want to enjoy a bit of outdoor exercise – there are many romantic places to walk and enjoy the winter wonderland.

My suggestions would include -

1. The ever amazing Rockefeller Preserve – The Preserve is open daily until dusk and the walking the trails is wonderful no matter what time of year it is.

2. Kingsland Point Park in Sleepy Hollow and Pierson Park in Tarrytown. The Hudson River gets the sunsets – so going near dusk will assure you of nature serving up a colorful display.

3. If you prefer salt water – Manor Park in Larchmont provides a wonderful backdrop for a romantic walk. You don’t get the blazing sunsets – but the views are spectacular none the less.

4. For those who like to skate – the Playland Ice Casino is offering

DJ Party Night on Friday night – from 8:45-11PM
Saturday Night Grooves – on Saturday from 8:45-11 PM
Sunday Family Skate from 1:30 – 5 PM

Westchester Restaurants – Fine Dining for your Valentine:

Equus Restaurant – at Castle on the Hudson in Tarrytown – is offering Valentines full course dinners on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. – Pricey but worth it

Sweet Grass Grill - in Tarrytown offers seasonal organic fare. Excellent food and near the Hudson River for those who want to enjoy romantic sunsets.

X2O Xaviars - Yonkers – Wonderful Sunset views. Contemporary American cuisine with vaulted ceilings and 3 glass walls to ensure that the water views can be enjoyed by all.

Chat 19 – in Larchmont – American Cuisine – casual yet upscale. Personally, I love Chat 19. It was one of fathers favorite restaurants and he was a 23 year resident of Larchmont. Take a walk in Manor Park and enjoy a wonderful meal.

Le Provencal Bistro - in Mamaroneck. A wonderful French Bistro. Admittedly, I have not been there personally, but have heard nothing but good things.

Legal Sea Food – White Plains NY – For those who are craving seafood – Legal Seafood in White Plains is a popular destination with fresh fish and shell fish – variety is never an issue.

Massa Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar - in Scarsdale at the 5 corners on Weaver Street. Classical Italian menu with an emphasis on seafood. Vaulted ceiling and Old-World charm.

Half Moon in Dobbs Ferry - American Cuisine – casual dining and magnificent river views including the Manhattan skyline.

Zitoune - Mamaroneck – Moroccan cuisine – for a change of pace with a nouveau twist. Once again – I’ve heard good things from foodies – so I’m going by word of mouth – no pun intended.

I rarely set up a separate post to promote my open houses, but I thought I would do so this one time because…..

I am pleased to offer a raffle for a $25 gift certificate for the popular and well acclaimed CHAT 19 American Grill.

One of the most active hot-spots for fine dining in Larchmont NY (and more recently Scarsdale NY) Among Larchmont restaurants – Chat 19 is one of the busiest and after sampling the food and the comfortable ambiance, I can see why. I wrote a review of Chat 19 just few months ago. I had many a happy meal there with my father and his sister when she was in town. My Dad lived in Larchmont for 28 years and was quite a fan of Chat 19.

The Stonecrest – Larchmont NY is a wonderful pre-war complex – in an elegant Tudor style. It is a doorman building with a parking lot and garage – although there is a wait list for parking. Located just steps from the train and town. You can literally give up the car and walk to almost everything. The Larchmont to Grand Central Station commute is just over 30 minutes – making this slice of suburbia more convenient to work than some residential locations in Manhattan. The video below gives a great feel for the complex and the unit.

The unit itself is a large (850 sf) 1 BR/1 BA offered at $220,000 which is a very competitive price for the complex. It boasts original but newly refinished hard wood floors, and is freshly painted. It has high cove ceilings original details and ample closet space. The kitchen and the bath need work and that is reflected in the asking price. Larchmont Tavern – Larchmont NY

Another Larchmont restaurant that is a real hot spot among the locals is the famous Larchmont Tavern. The LT dates back to the Great Depression. It opened in 1933 – at the height of the depression. Today it is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Located at 104 Chatsworth Ave., its central location makes it a draw for families and commuters a like. It is practically across the street from Metro-North making it a convenient destination for commuters looking to grab a bite or a drink after work. The place is always packed and the reason for that is obvious. The food is basic family fare – but done well and with excellent service. Personally, I love their salads particularly the Spicy Southwestern. No need to order extras – the salads are huge and there is always plenty for a second meal the next day.

Chat 19 – a very popular Larchmont restaurant

Larchmont restaurants are very popular places for the locals to gather. Larchmont is very much a bedroom community – and after a long day in the city, many of the residents like to eat out. One of my favorite places to eat in Larchmont is the famous Chat 19. Chat 19 is one of a cohort of Westchester restaurants by Mario Fava – who saught to bring New York City to Westchester. This is one of the most popular places to dine in Larchmont. The place is generally packed and in the summer, the crowd spills over to the sidewalk for outdoor dining. I particularly like eating outdoors. Larchmont is charming and its a wonderful experience to watch the crowds on the street on a warm summer night. Chat 19 is popular for a good reason: the food is wonderful. The cusine is American Grill. The decor could best be described as So-Ho style.

The food is excellent as is the service. I particularly enjoy the spaghetti squash where squash is shaved into “angel hair spaghetti” with diced vegitables, pine nuts and nice tomato sauce. It may sound a bit strange but it is a wonderful meatless meal. I’ve also enjoyed the Jambalaya which is nicely spicy without going over the top.
