Metro-North Makes the Lower Westchester NY Commute the Envy of the Tri-State Area:
The Metro-North commute to Grand Central Station is a hallmark of the Westchester lifestyle. Many Cities and villages in lower Westchester boast a train station in their municipality and a commute that is the envy of the Tristate area which includes Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island, and New York counties both north and west of us.
Nothing short of actually living in Manhattan beats Westchester for an easy commute. In fact, for a commute to midtown Manhattan - access from Westchester is easier than commuting from parts of Brookyln, Queens and even more remote parts of upper Manhattan such as Inwood.
When people ask me why lower Westchester has remained so resistant to the housing crash that surrounding areas are suffering through – my answer always includes “Metro-North.”
The above map is a blow up of the lower part of the county with the train lines depicted. I will cover each of these train lines individually in more detail in future posts. But below are the bullet points for each train line.

The New Haven Line Schedule
The New Haven Line runs 73 miles along the eastern portion of lower Westchester hugging the Long Island Sound and into Connecticut all the way to New Haven. Most commutes to Manhattan are about 30 minutes long during peak hours with times ranging from roughly 20 to 40 minutes.
The New Haven Line schedule runs 60 peak hour trains in the morning which arrive at Grand Central Station between 5:30 – 10 AM. The 53 evening peak trains depart Grand Central Station between 4-8 PM.
NOTE: Not all of these trains have stops in Westchester because lower Westchester only represents about 26 miles of the 73 mile line – but roughly half have do have Westchester stops.
Peak express stops include Rye, Larchmont, and Mt. Vernon East.
The New Haven Line runs 4-6 off-peak trains an hour both inbound and outbound. Once again – roughly half of these trains make stops in Westchester.

The Harlem Line Schedule
The Harlem Line runs 53 miles right up the center portion of the county and serves mostly the land-locked towns and villages such as White Plains, Scarsdale, and Bronxville to name a few.
The Harlem line runs 47 trains during the morning peak hours arriving in Grand Central between 5:30-10 AM. 41 evening peak hour trains run on the Harlem Line departing Grand Central Station between 4-8 PM.
During off-peak hours there are 3 trains an hour inbound and outbound.
White Plains is the express stops during off-peak and has the added benefit of being a stop for every off-peak train. North White Plains is also a stop for every single train during off-peak hours. An express train from White Plains to Grand Central Station is 33 minutes and 29 minutes for Scarsdale. The Hudson Line Schedule
The Hudson Line runs from Grand Central Station to Poughkeepsie along a 74 mile run boasting Hudson river views for most of the journey. It serves the west side of the county. For lower Westchester, the run ends in Tarrytown which by express train is a mere 38 minutes from Grand Central. If you include Tarrytown’s sister town – Sleepy Hollow, its a 41 minute run by express train.
The Hudson Line schedule runs 38 trains during the morning peak – and includes trains that arrive at Grand Central between 5:30 AM – 10 AM. The Hudson Line runs 34 trains during the evening peak which depart Grand Central Station between 4 PM – 8 PM. There are two trains an hour during off-peak hours.
Express stops in Lower Westchester during peak hours include Hastings-on-Hudson, Tarrytown, Yonkers and Greystone. Off-peak express stops include a train that stops in Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry and Tarrytown. Tarrytown is the major express during off-peak and benefits from being a stop on almost all off-peak trains.
