Now that everyone has been stuffed with turkey and been through the madness of black Friday, its time to get ready for Small Business Saturday which is the day I try to get most of my own holiday shopping done. And with good reason. Small businesses are the backbone of a community because they employ people at decent wages.  Also, more of each dollar spent at a small business is returned directly to the community than when it is spent in a chain store.

Supporting local merchants has never been more important than it is today. Unfortunately, the current business environment does not favor local business. Many feel squeezed by increased online shopping, out of control rents and the general lack of political will to support their prosperity.

So Small Business Saturday is a day where we can all give back to those local merchants that we count on for so much. So here are a smattering of my favorite local business picks for lower Westchester.

White Plains…

The Westchester Road Runner…
179 East Post Rd,  White Plains
For the perfect pair of running or walking shoes there is no better place in the tristate area – literally. They have everything you need for the road year round.

Rooster’s Market…
48 Gedney Way, White Plains
For catered events or just a great place for a cup of coffee and a sandwich, you can’t beat Rooster’s.

Lombardo’s Pizza…
1203 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains
Great Italian food every day. A great way to relax and recharge after a long day of shopping!

Carlson’s Greenhouse and Nursery…
625 Dobbs Ferry Rd, White Plains
Carlson’s is the best when it comes to holiday decorations and great gifts with a local flair. The arrangements are as amazing as they are unique. A must-see just for the holiday atmosphere alone.

Amethyst Integrative Massage…
62 Waller Ave, White Plains
Great for relieving holiday tension.

Mamaroneck & Larchmont…

Sal’s Pizza…
316 Mamaroneck Ave, Mamaroneck
Anyone who has lived in Westchester knows all about Sals. There is no better pizza – ANYWHERE!!!

Chocolations…
607 E Boston Post Rd,  Mamaroneck
For the perfect confection. The artistry alone is amazing. Great as gifts or as a gift to yourself.

The Voracious Reader…
1997 Palmer Ave, Larchmont
In a world of digital downloads and chain stores, the Voracious Reader is an amazing place for children and adults alike. An old-fashioned children’s bookstore with modern amenities and events galore. The kids will love it!

Larchmont Tavern…
104 Chatsworth Ave, Larchmont
I used to come here with my father. Larchmont’s favorite family restaurant. Great for young and old and everyone in between. Enjoy great American fare after shopping until you drop.

Scarsdale…

Vintology…
Two Palmer Avenue, Scarsdale
Located at five corners in Heathcote, this great wine store has a wonderful selection of wines in a variety of price ranges. The staff is wonderful and they can even help the biggest of wine neophytes find the right selection.

Tarrytown…

Bark & Meow…
9 Broadway, Tarrytown
Whatever you could possibly want for your four-footed family member. Great organic pet food as well. The owner is very knowledgable about diets for pets and the specific needs of older and younger pets. Great retail experience from coats, to collars to food.

Coffee Labs Roasters…
7 Main St, Tarrytown
Some of the best coffee to be had anywhere. Specialty coffees, great blends and amazing lattes. Nothing like it on a cold winter’s day.

Mint Premium Foods…
19 Main St, Tarrytown
Whether you would like a nice meal at the end of the day or specialty shopping for your own pantry, this is an amazing place with a unique assortment. I took a friend who is quite an amazing cook here to dinner and she was very impressed. And this is someone who is NOT easy to impress!

Baby Chic Consignment…
38 S Broadway, Tarrytown
Amazing consignment shop with everything from strollers to toys to high-end clothing. Everything a little one could wish for for the holidays.

Pleasantville…

The Black Cow…
7 Wheeler Ave, Pleasantville
Yes, there is a Starbucks across the street, but this is far better than Starbucks. I had a cafe mocha there a little while back and it was great.

Hope you enjoyed these quick picks and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all!
