Westchester has always been a destination location for many New Yorkers looking to commute to Manhattan or just be near the big city.
Niche.com has gone to the trouble of rating the top 100 “Best Places to Live” as well as “Best Places to Raise a Family” in the state of New York.
26 Westchester locations made the list for the “Top 100 Best Places to Live” category and 27 Westchester locations were listed in the “Top 100 Best Places to Raise a Family” category. In addition, 17 locations were lucky enough to make both top 100 lists.
To put this into proper perspective, Niche rated cities, towns, villages and hamlets. In the state of New York, there are roughly 1550, cities, towns and villages combined. So, for Westchester to take over 25% of the top locations on both lists is pretty impressive.
Niche appears to take a holistic approach in arriving at their conclusions. Their criteria include, public schools, real estate, good for families, crime and safety, nightlife, diversity, jobs, weather, cost of living, health and fitness, outdoor activities and commute.

Now, some of these listings are redundant. For example, the town of Greenburgh encompasses the villages of Ardsley, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, and Tarrytown, all of which are on both top 100 lists. But, no matter how you slice it, Westchester definitely gets two-thumbs up for livability.
