Westchester is a popular destination for home buyers and it proves the point the point that real estate truly is location, location, location! The proximity of Manhattan by Metro-North makes the commute from lower Westchester a breeze. However, not everyone works in Manhattan and there are several other destinations that commuters in Westchester have easy access to.
The map shows the major parkways and interstates that make commuting by car to various destinations as simple as the Manhattan commute by train.
Interstate 87 – Access to NY – New Jersey
Going south on I-87 gives drivers easy access to Manhattan (as the Maj. Deegan Expwy). Northbound on I-87 goes up the west side of the county from Yonkers, to Irvington where it merges with I-287 and makes a turn to the west at the Tappan Zee Bridge taking drivers into Rockland County which provides easy access to the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey.
Interstate 95 & I-287 – Access to Connecticut – the Bronx – Manhattan
The I-95 corridor is well known to all on the east coast as it hugs the eastern seaboard. At the local level drivers can access the Bronx and Manhattan and Queens via the Throggs Neck Bridge. Going northbound go to I-95 goes straight up the coast to Connecticut – providing access to business centers in Greenwich, Stamford and even Danbury.
The major route going east to west is I-287
Access to I-87 north and south
Access to I-684 going up-county
The Sprain Brook Parkway going north and south
The Saw Mill River Parkway going north or south
I-684 – Originates in White Plains – to upper Westchester – CT and beyond
The Cross County Parkway
A small stretch of Parkway that goes east to west from. on the eastern side it originates with the Hutchison River Parkway and Terminates at the Saw Mill River Parkway.
The Hutchinson River Parkway
The Hutchinson Parkway goes North to south along the eastern and mid portion of the county. It becomes the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut, and continues to the Whitestone bridge and into Queens going southbound. It also merges with I-95 in the Bronx.
The Sprain Brook Parkway and the Bronx River Parkway
Both run north to south in the mid-county region. The Sprain originates from the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers and then merges with the Bronx River Parkway again in Valhalla where it becomes the Taconic State Parkway which goes upstate.
The Saw Mill River Parkway
The Saw Mill River Parkway runs north to south on along the western portion of the county with exits in the River Towns along the Hudson. Continuing northbound it merges with I-84 which runs easterly into Connecticut providing easy access to Danbury CT.
